Keepers of the Canton Native Asylum Story

Mission:  “To come together as human beings to honor the people, to enhance and embrace Education, Preservation and Reconciliation for all those affected by the Asylum”

On behalf of the “Keepers…”, a group of Native and non-native individuals, it is my privilege to announce, and invite your participation in, the 2016 Honoring and Remembrance, Saturday, May 7th in Canton, South Dakota.

The honoring of those affected by the existence of the Canton Asylum for Insane Indians (aka Hiawatha) began in 1988 through the efforts of Harold Iron Shield.  In doing so, the one hundred and twenty-one souls buried at the asylum cemetery, and hundreds of other Native men, women and children who passed through the asylum doors know that they are not forgotten.

As children of the Creator, it is only right that we come together for the continuance of honoring and remembering, and gain "wisdom" in our lives.  Please spread the message of this honoring through word of mouth and written communications so that individuals may plan to attend.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions regarding the honoring, how you might become involved or you would like the “Keepers…” to give a presentation in your community.

With Faith and Respect,
Ross Lothrop, “Keepers…” Facilitator
