What started as an engagement opportunity in the summer has turned into a weekly commitment to be part of a group that is growing in faith and connection.

On Thursday evenings, six to 10 families gather in Harrisburg, South Dakota, for play, conversation, connection, and digging into their faith. Small groups serve as the relational glue for faith communities. The group that gathers in Harrisburg United Methodist Church has evolved into a unique framework.

"We had been struggling to get people to commit to a midweek gathering for Bible study. People have a lot going on, especially couples with young children," said Rev. Brandon Dunham, Harrisburg UMC. "As a parent myself, I get it. It can be daunting to try to find childcare every week."

The church does not have a nursery or childcare option. There is a nursery space, but it is not staffed. Pastor Brandon tested out a rotation model for Bible study or small group. One week, the women, or moms, meet for Bible study, and the dads watch the children. Next week, the men will meet for Bible study, while the moms will watch the kids.

"We just take turns watching all the kids. One week, the dads hang out and the kids play. It is an informal time where we get to know one another while spouses are in Bible study," explains Pastor Brandon. "The next week, the moms watch the kids while the dads are in the Bible study. If you were going to leave your child with anybody, what better option than your spouse?"

The group started in June at a park right next to the church. Everyone gathers, and then the kids head out with moms or dads—whoever is responsible for children's supervision that week. Then the other group gathers around for Bible study.

"We started with a picnic at the park. We got to know each other and then launched the Bible study from there," said Pastor Brandon.
This fall, the group has gathered at the church building. If the weather is good, the parents watching the children head to the park or outside. The nursery space is also available for the children to play indoors.

"The parents who are watching the kids have a chance to be informal and flexible. I have gotten to know other parents and built relationships," Pastor Brandon shared. "The every-other-week schedule allows for a rhythm of rest and relaxation."

Snacks, donated by members of the congregation, are available for the children. The age of children ranges from infant through sixth grade. Right now, play time is not structured. In the winter season, play with the children will likely become more intentional as space is limited indoors.

The Bible study is framed around a book of the Bible. Galatians was the first selection. Pastor Brandon developed discussion questions for Galatians. Right now, Bible study is focusing on the current sermon series, Sermon on the Mount.

"People come every week and are committed to being part of the study. They look forward to the time when they get to focus on faith," Pastor Brandon said.

Participants are enjoying the weekly gatherings. The men's Bible study, led by Pastor Brandon, has four to seven participants. The women's Bible study shares the leadership with about 10 participants each week.

"There are a few fewer men. I think men are a little more reluctant. I hope the model will be enticing. Instead of staying at home alone with the kids, it is kind of nice to have a group to hang out with and watch the kids together. Then you can have your own time to explore the Bible with other adults," shared Pastor Brandon.

More people are considering joining because they find comfort in the format and schedule. Pastor Brandon said, "We have had a good response. I am hopeful that others will connect and join in."
