John said Mary showed extravagant love for Jesus, and Jesus was grateful for it. But Judas coldly condemned the gift, and did so, John said, for corrupt reasons. Judas’ criticism was outwardly credible: “Why wasn’t [this perfume] sold and the money given to the poor?” Jesus, knowing the insincerity and lack of concern for the poor that lay behind it, said simply, “Leave her alone.” Are you ever tempted to criticize the way someone else praises or serves God?
