From Amanda Schwenn, Grand Forks Zion UMC
The Wild Hog Marathon has been a popular event in Grand Forks, ND for years, with thousands turning out every year to run, cheer and celebrate the achievements of their neighbors. On Saturday, September 26th, people travelled from as far away as Canada, Colorado, and Florida to participate. Local radio and TV stations were in attendance to announce the runners and report on the event.
This year, Zion UMC of Grand Forks was there to lend a hand. Twelve of their members arrived bright and early to set up tables of food and water to serve runners as they crossed the finish line. Several members also had the opportunity to hand out medals to runners to commemorate their achievements.
Zion's volunteers, donning the fun blue t-shirts made to distinguish them from the throng of participants, reflected on their experiences the next day during Sunday worship. Everyone had a fun time, commenting on how rewarding it was to get together as a church, participating in an event that means so much to the community as a whole.
Taking part in the Wild Hog Marathon is one of many community outreach activities in which Zion has been participating. Their volunteers were so excited for this opportunity to serve the community outside the church walls. The Zion UMC Mission Team and Hospitality Team are now discussing more upcoming community events and programs they could participate in or support in God's name.
